Personal and Business Bankruptcies Increase in South Florida

Personal and business-related bankruptcies rose in number in 2008 in the South Florida area and officials are expecting that the numbers will continue to rise in 2009. Over 20,000 new cases were filed in bankruptcy court in South Florida in 2008 and that number is expected to increase as the New Year moves forward. Major businesses that have influence in Florida that filed for bankruptcy include Levitz, Linens 'N Things, Sharper Image, Circuit City, KB Toys and many more. The record for cases filed for bankruptcy in the area was set in 2005 when the total surpassed 35,000.

Experts feel that the number of filings will continue to grow in 2009 with more and more credit card delinquencies occurring. "Much of the talk nationally among the leading financial institutions is that credit card delinquencies are going to skyrocket next year," Paul Keenan Jr. said. "The likely result will be a big uptick in consumer bankruptcies." Keenan is a shareholder at Greenberg, Traurig in Miami.
