At Pharmed, Brothers in Arms and in Fraud

Two brothers, Carlos and Jorge de Cespedes, owners of the bankrupt Pharmed Group Holdings Inc., have been sentenced to nine years in prison for health care fraud and tax evasion. The brothers cheated the Kendall Regional Medical Center out of $5 million through fraudulent practices that lasted roughly five years. The company, based out of Miami, filed for bankruptcy in 2007. It listed its acquisition of PAL Laboratories as one of the reasons it went bankrupt as well as the loss of a handful of customers. The company failed to mention in the bankruptcy petition as to why they lost the customers that they lost.

Pharmed was liquidated in bankruptcy and is no longer in operation. Pharmed was once the eighth-largest Hispanic owned business in America. The company also cheated hospitals out of money by charging them for items that were never actually shipped to the hospitals.
